Exhibition: ‘Stay’ Arteria Gallery, Lancaster

‘Stay’ - Arteria Gallery, Lancaster

A couple of months ago I was delighted to receive an invitation from Arteria Gallery, Lancaster to participate in their summer (June - September) exhibition entitled ‘Stay’

Staya while and keep the best moments with you

It doesn’t have to be far. Sometimes it’s a favourite bench at the end of your road at the right time of evening. Sometimes it’s a square in a city you only visited once, on the other side of the world. Either way, places like these make the best memories, and at Arteria you can visit them again.

This summer, our exhibition Stay invites you to slow down and remember the special moments. Across jewellery, prints, ceramics, and other contemporary arts and crafts, independent artists bring the full sensory life of summer memories into one collection. Let a piece of jewellery catch the light and carry you back to a warm summer evening. Move through the gallery where colour, texture and form take you on a trip down a memory lane, reminding you of those precious moments where time stood still.

Visit our summer exhibition from June 18th.

The first-floor gallery space is open from 10am - 5pm, Tuesday - Saturday.

Some afternoons stay with you long after they’re over. We’d love for this to be one of them.

When I was asked to submit pieces for ‘Stay’, I decided to paint a new collection with Lancaster and the surrounding area in mind. Most pieces feature places and names local to the city and also animals typical of the area.

Various birds and animals painted on vintage maps and British railway ephemera, float framed in handmade copper foil frames. All work and framing by Olivia of The Badger Sett Studio.

The pieces are a mixture of smaller hanging pieces and some larger pieces on handmade oak stands. All pieces feature an original watercolour painting of British wildlife and all are float framed by hand in handmade copper foil frames. Some are painted on Furness Railway paperwork dating from 1900-1920.

One of my absolute favourite birds are oystercatchers. Comical looking and loud, I love the fact that we sometimes get them rootling in the fields where we are, 5 miles from the sands of Morecambe Bay or furiously flapping overhead with their familiar call. This one is painted on a lovely Bartholomew’s map section of Morecambe Bay.

Some of my larger pieces are painted on railway ‘handbills’ which were the early 20th century version of modern day flyers, advertising trips and discounted tickets on the different lines in the UK. These have lovely details front (and back) of local stations and places to visit. My copper foil frames allow the back to be viewed as well as the front!

As always with my work, I am passionate about making by hand with British made materials. I use the traditional copper foiling method, hand soldering and copper finishing each frame. Each base is cut, hand sanded and beeswax polished in my studio from reclaimed oak.

These pieces are available only from Arteria Gallery during their ‘Stay’ exhibition. The variety of contemporary British artists and makers selected for this exhibition compliment each other beautifully, as can be seen from the snapshots below that include my work.
